â Sounders FC today announced that it has exercised its option to buy midfielder João Paulo, completing his transfer from Brazilian club Botafogo. João Paulo made 25 appearances across all competitions on loan from Botafogo last season, tallying four goals and six assists as the Rave Green advanced to the 2020 MLS Cup Final.
âI am pleased to bring a player of João Pauloâs caliber back to Seattle after an impressive first season,â said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. âHeâs a player who brings a lot of positive things to our squad, on and off the field. We feel confident that JP, Nico Lodeiro and Raúl RuidÃaz filling our Designated Player slots puts us in a good position to win in 2021.â

“Books & Balls,” a special drive-through giveaway event for the region’s youth featuring the
distribution of Black-centered children’s books and high-quality soccer balls.
This Monday,
January 18, from
11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. PT, families are encouraged to come by the drive-through event, which is being held at the
Amy Yee Tennis Center (2000 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Seattle, WA). Former Sounders FC captain
Brad Evans will be onsite from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. PT assisting volunteers in distributing the free children’s books and soccer balls to those who attend.
The event supports the Rave Green’s “We Are All Sounders” social justice framework launched last summer, as the club continues to strive to create a stronger and more equitable community.

Down two goals but still within touching distance of LAFC, Frei produced a fantastic point-blank save on a breakaway against Diego Rossi. After beating the offside trap, Rossi had the entire goal at his mercy, only for Frei to deny a sure score with his trailing leg.

Sounders FC Head Coach Brian Schmetzer is fond of saying that goals change games. That old adage rings especially true for Frei s clutch stop against Sebastian Blanco in the first meeting between these Cascadia rivals in 2020. Protecting a one-goal lead, Frei kept his composure and pulled off a miraculous diving save to deny the Timbers an equalizer. The Rave Green would go on to win the match 3-0.
“I must have picked it up somewhere on the trip,” said Hutchinson.
“I tested negative before leaving Seattle but positive during my second day in quarantine and I’m now separated from the family (wife Kate, daughter Mahli, 7, and son Kai, 11)
“We’ll miss Christmas together this year but we’ve been looked after really well, and will hopefully be together for the New Year.
“The kids have had a tough year stuck in an apartment in Seattle (with coronavirus cases surging to new heights in America).
“That’s been 2020, it’s just been one of those things and (this latest episode) just about sums the year up.
