NEWPORT A large Black Lives Matter logo on the floor of the gymnasium at Rogers High School is causing some discussion in the community, according to School Committee members.
The logo is just the words “Black Lives Matter” and the letters are made of vinyl that can be removed from the floor.
Development and planning of the logo was an initiative of three students on the girls basketball team Miyah Brooks, Maeve Crowley and Ellie Margolis all of whom addressed the School Committee on Tuesday night.
“I think the main purpose of this is to start conversations, for people to be able to ask questions about it, and for people like me to explain why Black Lives Matter and how we are being suppressed,” Brooks, who is black, told the School Committee.

NEWPORT The city’s School Building Committee is now advertising for an architect and engineering firm to design a new Rogers High School in the coming year.
The 22-member committee that includes school and city officials, as well as volunteers from the community, is seeking separately an architect and construction firm to make a proposal for a “design-build” of the planned eight-room addition to the Pell Elementary School.
Finally, the committee, which is co-chaired by School Committee members Rebecca Bolan and Louisa Boatwright, is seeking a construction manager for the two projects.
“We know that the Pell addition will look like the rest of the school and how it will be configured, so we decided to seek a design-build proposal for that project,” Bolan said.
This last day of the 2020 year is going to be more than welcomed by the world. Especially the entertainment sector. The shutdowns from Coronavirus strangled theaters and entertainment businesses. Some still exist. Some are in hibernation. Some will never return. Whatever entertainment businesses are left are in hope-mode for the 2021 year. Â
HMTC hopes to do a reading of a play I wrote about the Mussel Slough Tragedy. It was planned for the 140
th anniversary last May. Well, we will do a 141
st anniversary of the event this next time.
We also hope to participate in the Hollywood Fringe Festival with our play PEDRO THE PUPPETEER, which was postponed last summer. Â Gabriel Omar Pimentel, Brandi Aguilar and Raymond Gomez were to star in the show in Hollywood. The fringe said it will still go on, but they are making sure it is safe to do so. They promised to keep us posted.
