Silver City enacts fire restrictions Written by Geoffrey Plant on April 28, 2021 Fire Chief Milo Lambert announced the implementation of Stage 1 fire restrictions at Tuesday evening’s regular meeting of the Silver City Town Council: “Effective immediately.” “We have moved into an extreme drought condition, [and] with our local winds and the amount of dry grass and timber in our area  and in consultation with Town Manager [Alex] Brown we have decide to enact Stage 1 fire restrictions for the town of Silver City,” Lambert said, adding that the last time such restrictions were imposed was on April 16, 2019. “I’ve been meeting with the Forest Service. They enacted fire restrictions across the entirety of the Gila” that went into effect Tuesday, Lambert continued. “Ours will go into effect immediately.”

April 9, 2021 Fire head: ‘Grant County’s ready’ for fire season Written by Geoffrey Plant on April 9, 2021 Local, state and federal firefighters are gearing up for a potentially very busy fire season, according to Grant County Fire Management Officer Randy Villa, who updated commissioners Thursday about the county’s overall fire preparedness as it heads into what is predicted to be a hot and dry summer. Commissioners also heard a report from Gila Regional Medical Center interim CEO Scott Landrum, who had good news for veterans seeking care at the county-owned hospital. Fire season “We’re in fire season, in my mind,” said Villa, who explained that firefighters recently gathered for their annual collaborative meeting to review resources and readiness, and to coordinate planning efforts among several state and federal agencies, Grant County’s volunteer fire departments and the Silver City Fire Department.

Fireworks suspected in Mountain View blazes

(Press Staff Photo by Kendra Milligan) Silver City firefighters joined forces with volunteers from Whiskey Creek and Tyrone departments to put down “four or five” grass fires along Mountain View Road just after 7 p.m. Sunday. Investigators were still at work Sunday night, but residents reported the occupants of a gray vehicle shooting fireworks at the time the fires began. A series of grass fires along Mountain View Road on Sunday evening was sparked by fireworks launched from a vehicle driving along the road, according to residents, but thanks to cooperative winds and a quick response from firefighters, no property damage was reported.
