Former paramedic gets 13 years for ambulance sex assault

URBANA — A veteran paramedic who used his position to scout for victims has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman in an ambulance. Judge Randy Rosenbaum said Jeffrey Sanford Jr. had two sides: the public person who worked hard as a medical professional to support his family and the private person who took advantage of those with physical and psychological problems who he thought wouldn’t be believed. “He has destroyed the public trust in calling for an ambulance,” Rosenbaum said of the 48-year-old Gifford man whom he convicted in an October bench trial of criminal sexual assault.

Champaign man with prior convictions gets 4 years for having loaded gun

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted he had a gun he is prohibited from possessing was sentenced to four years in prison. Hedrick admitted to Judge Randy Rosenbaum that on May 9, he had a .40-caliber handgun in Champaign. Assistant State’s Attorney Kristin Alferink said police were sent to the 100 block of West Hill Street because a person reported a vehicle was parked, playing loud music, and that over a period of several hours, other cars were driving up and people were getting in and out.

Convicted shooter s sentencing continued after failed attempt to get new lawyer

URBANA — A Champaign man facing decades in prison for weapons offenses had his sentencing hearing continued Wednesday after trying unsuccessfully to get a new lawyer. She was his third attorney in the case filed against him 18 months ago. Charged in July 2019 in a June 22 shooting that occurred outside Hollywood Liquors, 512 S. Neil St., C, Shah was first represented by the Champaign County Public Defender’s Office, then hired Champaign attorney Jamie Propps about a week after being charged.
