We’ve Got Sax Appeal: Thousands worldwide expected to attend 2023 international band competition in Buckhannon BUCKHANNON – City officials started marching through 2021 on the ‘right foot’ as they learned Buckhannon was selected to host an incredibly unique event – one that promises to put Buckhannon, Upshur County and West Virginia on the map. During a virtual announcement on Friday, Robert Eklund, International President and CEO of the World Association of Marching Show Bands, announced that Buckhannon will be the site of the WAMSB Championship Event in 2023. This is only the second time in the competition’s history that the host site has been in the United States.

Marianne Lester, avid reader, history buff

December 16, 2020 Marianne Lester, 72, of Milton, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020, at her winter home in Dunedin, Fla., after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by lifetime partner, Bet Orr; and sister and brother-in-law Sharon and Randy Saunders.  She is also survived by her nieces, Fallon and Michelle, and Michelle’s husband Scott Davis.  Well-known in the area, Marianne will be greatly missed by many dear friends. A graduate of American University, Marianne spent her 30-year career as a Washington, D.C. journalist.  She entered the field with The Army Times Publishing Company and capped her career as editor-in-chief of the Federal Times.
