San Francisco schools, already facing fiscal challenges, an ongoing pandemic and a city-led lawsuit, now will have to grapple with an imminent vacancy in the district’s top job with the departure of Superintendent Vince Matthews in June.
Matthews announced Wednesday that he will retire at the end of the school year.
His departure follows a brutal couple of years of controversies and public backlash in the district, including rallies over reopening, protests against the renaming of schools, fights over admission to Lowell High School and months-long negotiations with labor unions over pending in-person instruction. Billy Ray “Bill”
Rist, 84 passed away on Jan. 23, 2021, in Eureka. He was a long-time
resident of Humboldt County. He also lived with his beloved wife,
Gloria Rist, in Hawkins Bar for several years.
Bill was born in
Washakie, Wyoming to Irwin and Mary Rist. At a young age his family
moved to Washington State and then migrated to California for
employment. He enlisted in the Army and served in Korea. He was
assigned to the 76TH Engineering battalion. He was a very
gentle soul and touched many lives, especially his grandchildren.

McCracken County Public Library Director Susan Baier has resigned to accept a position leading a library in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
A McCracken County Public Library press release Thursday states Baier accepted a position as Executive Director of the Allen County Public Library, and her last day of employment will be February 10.
Serving as McCracken County Public Library director for four years, the release states Baier built partnerships that support community initiatives surrounding workforce and economic development, STEM education, and health and wellness. The library also acquired a bookmobile, eliminated overdue fines, and made services more accessible to the public.
