Time is running out, says UN, as HIV/AIDS targets missed

3 Min Read LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The world has missed ambitious goals to stem the spread of HIV and widen access to treatment, jeopardising a target to end the AIDS pandemic by 2030 unless global efforts are stepped up, the United Nations said on Thursday. Last year, 84% of HIV-positive people knew they had the virus, with 87% of them taking antiretroviral drugs. Of those on medication, 90% had levels of the virus suppressed to a level so low it cannot be passed on, UNAIDS said in a report. Targets of 90% by 2020 were set for each of the three goals five years ago, but the U.N. agency said global progress had been stymied by COVID-19.

Croatian LGBT+ rights group says court backs same-sex adoption

4 Min Read LONDON, May 6 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A Croatian court has ruled that same-sex partners can now adopt children, backing a gay couple in their five-year fight for the right to family life, according to lawyers and LGBT+ activists involved in the case. Zagreb’s Administrative Court ruled on April 21 that same-sex couples should not face discrimination in state adoption, the Rainbow Families Association (RFA) said on its website, alongside a redacted copy of the judgment. Contacted by phone on Thursday, an administrator at the court confirmed the judgment to the Thomson Reuters Foundation, as did the couple’s lawyer.

Political backlash blamed for halting LGBT+ rights gains in Europe

Political backlash blamed for halting LGBT+ rights gains in Europe Reuters 2 hrs ago By Rachel Savage LONDON, May 17 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Progress on laws to boost LGBT+ rights has come to a virtual standstill in Europe amid a rise in homophobic and anti-transgender rhetoric by politicians in countries including Poland and Hungary, an advocacy group said on Monday. Britain, Italy and Ukraine were among the nations that scored lower rankings in this year s Rainbow Europe index compiled by ILGA-Europe, which said legislative reforms had stalled due to increasing polarization over LGBT+ rights. There s been a clear political backlash in many countries, and not just ones grabbing headlines like Poland and Hungary, Evelyne Paradis, ILGA-Europe s executive director, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone.
