Mountain View police have arrested a Concord man in connection with a machete attack on Cristano Avenue, near the sprawling recreation area of Rengstorff Park.
The incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. on March 31, when a 43-year-old resident said he was approached by several men while walking to his car. During the ensuing struggle the victim was struck with a machete, causing superficial wounds to his upper body, police said.
Officers who arrived at the scene pulled over a gray sedan that matched descriptions of a suspect vehicle. By running a records check they found the vehicle was reported stolen from a neighboring jurisdiction days earlier. The Oakland City Council voted Tuesday to create a new agency within the Fire Department to handle the behavioral calls that traditionally have fallen on police, for people intoxicated in the street, disturbing the peace or acting erratically.
Although it had unanimous support from the council members, the resolution and ordinance to start the Mobile Assistance Community Responders of Oakland program, known as MACRO, left many questions unanswered.

A police union boss in Richmond has made his bid to unseat the longtime sheriff of Contra Costa County, days after a high-profile shooting by a sheriff’s employee in Danville.
Benjamin Therriault, 38, is no outsider California law requires that sheriff candidates have law enforcement certification. He has done police work for years, having served in the U.S. Air Force Security Forces before joining the Richmond Police Department in 2009.
