In spite of a staff recommendation to the contrary, the Town Council voted unanimously on Jan. 5 to allow a volunteer program to add black paint to the light bollards in Fountain Park to continue.
In February 2020, the council authorized Ted Blank, a member of the International Dark Sky Discovery Center board of directors, to organize a group of volunteers to apply black paint to the bollards in an effort to reduce glare from the lights. Twenty of the bollards were painted as a pilot to test the durability and longevity of the paint.
In her staff report to the council, Community Services Director Rachael Goodwin stated, âThe matte black paint shows significant flaking and fading. The film from irrigation water has also dulled and spotted the painted surface, resulting in a cloudy effect.
The Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce has announced an alternative date for the spring Fountain Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts. In a statement released on Friday, Jan. 8, Chamber officials announced that the new dates for the festival will be April 9-11, 2021.
The alternative date comes after Mayor Ginny Dickey invoked an earlier executive order by Governor Doug Ducey allowing local authorities to limit the size of permitted special events in town to no more than 50 people (see separate story).
âWe are optimistic and confident that after the success of our November show, that we can produce events such as the Fountain Festival in a safe way,â said Paige Lorentzen, the Chamberâs Events and Marketing Manager.
