TROY, N.Y. — Rensselaer County District Mary Pat Donnelly announced the sentencing of Rashad Edwards, 36, of Troy, in the 2019 stabbing death of Brianna Haughton of Schodack. Rensselaer County Court Judge Jennifer Sober sentenced Edwards to 23 years to life for the charge of felony second-degree murder, and 3 1/2 to seven years for felony third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The ruling by the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals also declined to grant qualified immunity to the deceased sergeant, Randall French, because eyewitness testimony called into question the officer s claim that the shooting was justified.
