Reno-Tahoe International Airport will enter the summer with the highest number of nonstop destinations in its history as air travel starts to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The number, which also includes flights from Stellar Aviation on Rock Boulevard, is good news for an airport that saw its passenger counts tank by 95% from COVID just a year ago.
“In July, we will have 25 destinations nonstop on 10 airlines, which is an all-time high for us,” said Daren Griffin, president and CEO of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, during a joint retreat by the agency and the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority on Friday.
People-watching at the airport isn t going to be the same this year, again. What’s fun to watch is the reaction of other travelers (to Burners). A couple of times, I’ve watched someone wearing a navy or black suit and they see someone coming back from the playa covered in dust, said Brian Kulpin, spokesman for the Reno Tahoe International Airport. You can see the anxiety in their eyes of, Oh man, I hope I’m not sitting next to that person.
Burning Man Project announced Tuesday that, for the second year in a row, it was not moving forward with this year s event in Northern Nevada, which had been set for Aug. 26 to Sept. 3. The festival is set to return in 2022.
A fourth suspect was arrested this week in connection with a violent armed robbery in March of two men. The pair had just left an Incline, Nev. gaming property when they were held up.
