Calls mount for lawmaker accused of harassment to resign Women accuse East Portland legislator Diego Hernandez of creating a hostile workplace in Salem. The political group East County Rising has called for state Rep. Diego Hernandez to quit the legislature amid allegations of sexual harassment. We are calling on Rep. Hernandez to resign, as we do not believe he can adequately maintain his duties as an elected official, the group said in an email on Monday, Feb. 8. A legislative committee voted Friday, Feb. 5, to recommend the expulsion of Hernandez (D-47) from the Oregon House on multiple violations of a rule barring sexual harassment. As of Monday morning, an expulsion vote had not yet been scheduled.

Portland Public Schools: In the latest update from the school board, it said that it has expanded in-person learning opportunities but has not yet started hybrid learning for all K-5 students as it had intended.  In January, PPS chief of schools Dr. Shawn Bird spoke on the moves PPS was making to try and make hybrid learning possible. It hopes to begin the transition in April. “School administrators have been identifying the students that are eligible, and they’re reaching out to families individually, making sure that families understand this is optional and we want to make sure they feel safe,” he said.

January 12 2021 New state lawmakers Reps. Khanh Pham, Wlnsvey Campos and Ricki Ruiz, are sworn in for their first session as elected legislators. A trio of new lawmakers state Reps. Khanh Pham, Wlnsvey Campos and Ricki Ruiz were sworn in Monday, Jan. 11, and begin the long slog of the 2021 session next week. Pham and Ruiz represent portions of Multnomah County; Campos a portion of Washington County. All are young. Pham is Vietnamese American, while Campos self-identifies as Latina and Ruiz as Latinx. They are a more diverse representation for a metro area that, itself, is growing more diverse. And they have plans to make an impact on the state of Oregon.
