Frustration mounts as Clear Space sees more delays

News Briefs 2/2/21

February 2, 2021 Giles named new beach patrol captain Rehoboth Beach announced Jan. 28 that Jeffrey Giles, a 30-year veteran of the Delaware State Police, has been named as the new beach patrol captain. Giles, a Delaware native, held several DSP leadership positions, including supervising the maritime and scuba units. He also served on the safety committee for the annual Special Olympics Delaware Lewes Polar Bear Plunge that takes place in Rehoboth Beach. Rehoboth Beach Police Chief Keith Banks said Giles served five summers as a member of the Rehoboth Beach Patrol, including as a lieutenant, before he was with the state police.

Rehoboth Beach s Clear Space awaits city decision on new theaters

Delaware News Journal UPDATE: The vote was postponed one week to Friday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. to resolve any potential conflicts of interest within the commission, according to a statement from Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission Chairperson Jeffrey Trunzo. This also gives the commission time to review all written comments submitted before Feb. 5. A theater company that has been a staple of the Rehoboth Beach community since 2004 is looking to establish a new home on Rehoboth Avenue – but some neighbors aren’t quite ready for the show to begin. Ten days after the Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission approved the site plan for Clear Space Theatre’s two new buildings in August, a group of 15 residents signed and filed an appeal, concerned about the impact the theaters will have on the area.

New year, new public hearings for Clear Space

While a specific date has not yet been set, members of the Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission unanimously agreed that all information required to conduct a second public hearing on Clear Space Theatre Company’s proposed Rehoboth Avenue theater has been submitted. During a meeting Dec. 11, Planning Commission Chair Jeffrey Trunzo said he is still working with City Secretary Ann Womack to get a specific date, but he anticipates it to fall between mid-January and mid-February. There will be plenty of public notice, he said. City commissioners have ordered the planning commission to redo the public hearings for the site plans of Clear Space Theatre, a 256-seat traditional theater at 415 Rehoboth Ave., and for Rehoboth Spotlight, a rehearsal theater at 417 Rehoboth Ave. The proposed construction of the two buildings has been a years-long process for Clear Space Theatre Company, which is currently located on Baltimore Avenue.
