MADEIRA BEACH â In three weeks, the 2021 hurricane season will begin.
That reality is a source of dread for many people who live on the barrier islands along the Gulf of Mexico â and particularly so for Madeira Beach residents Grace Ariss and Eric Cabrera and their families.
For them, it seems like just yesterday that Tropical Storm Eta snuck up on Pinellas County beaches with up to 6 feet of storm surge to flood and severely damage hundreds of homes.
Seven months ago, Eta forced both families into temporary housing, and they are still unable to return to their homes.
âThere are still so many people still suffering here,â says Ariss. âWe are lucky that we could afford to rebuild, but not all people can do that.â
For the second consecutive week, Florida Department of Health reported fewer COVID-19 cases in Pinellas County. From April 26-May 2, 1,062 cases were reported, bringing the total to 79,146. The same as last week, 17 people died due to the novel coronavirus, upping the death toll to 1,613.

(CN) The town of Redington Beach is fighting to overturn a federal judge’s ruling that it claims jeopardizes local governments’ ability to safeguard public use of Sunshine State beaches.
In a Wednesday hearing before a three-judge panel for the 11th Circuit, the Florida town argued the ruling improperly axed an ordinance which protected public use of beaches regardless of private property lines in the sand.
Under the ordinance, beachgoers were allowed to freely walk and sunbathe on beaches across the barrier island town, save for a 15-foot buffer zone near private residences.
