Jenny Jones was the most egregious example of a puritan’s attempts to snuff out any spark of individuality. When a group of young punks or metalheads took her stage, Jones’ staff encouraged the crowd to relentlessly boo her guests, attempting to break them down psychologically before the makeover segment. Though the new looks got a warm reception from the once icy crowd, the kids onstage rarely enjoyed their forced transformation.

But that was not the most dramatic portion of the beaver segment.
The beaver panicked when music played heading into a commercial break and bit Hanna s hand. Hanna returned wearing a glove for the remainder of the segment.
“I started to get lightheaded and felt like I was going to puke,” Hanna said in a USA TODAY story. “I lasted for about 90 seconds until someone held up a cue card for Letterman and it says, Jack has been severely bitten. (Letterman) said, OK everyone, let’s take a break.’ ”
