USA TODAY A Minnesota prosecutor resigned Monday days after his office announced it would no longer handle the case against the former police officer charged in the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center. Imran Ali, the assistant criminal division chief at the Washington County attorney s office, wrote in a resignation letter published on the website of the KARE-11 TV station that vitriol and partisan politics made it difficult to pursue justice. Ali, who has worked in the office for 10 years, will leave in a month. “The last several weeks have been difficult for me and my family,” Ali wrote. I pray that our state heals and the extreme partisan platforms dissipate.

Hennepin County District  Judge  Regina Chu found there was probable cause to support the charge of second-degree manslaughter against former police Officer Kimberly Potter  at a virtual court hearing Monday. A trial is scheduled for Dec. 6. Defense attorney Earl Gray, who is representing Potter, did not contest the probable cause finding. Potter, wearing black, was seen on screen sitting behind him.

Created: May 21, 2021 10:35 PM Attorney General Keith Ellison’s office will prosecute former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter’s case. She is charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of Daunte Wright back in April.  Following the death of George Floyd, the Anoka, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington county attorneys agreed last June they would not review or prosecute deaths from police use of force in their own jurisdictions. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office followed this protocol, and as a result, Washington County Attorney Pete Orput charged Potter.  5 EYEWITNESS NEWS learned from the Attorney General s Office on Friday that Orput returned the case to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman, who requested Attorney General Ellison take over.
