GREENWICH As news spread of Bernie Madoff’s death Wednesday, the apartment and condo-complex where his wife lived for years in Old Greenwich was quiet.
Bernie Madoff was serving a 150-year prison term at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, N.C., for what was believed to be the biggest Ponzi scheme in the history of Wall Street when he died at the age of 82.

NEW YORK (AP) â Bernie Madoff, the financier who pleaded guilty to orchestrating a massive Ponzi scheme, died in a federal prison early Wednesday, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. He was 82.
Madoff died at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, apparently from natural causes, the person said. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity.
Last year, Madoffâs lawyers filed court papers to try to get him released from prison in the coronavirus pandemic, saying he had suffered from end-stage renal disease and other chronic medical conditions. The request was denied.

Madoff’s lawyer and the Bureau of Prisons confirmed that Madoff died at the Federal Medical Centre in Butner, North Carolina, on Wednesday, local time.
