Startup Notebook: Portland software developer raises $600K, joins Roux residency starting lineup

KinoTek Inc., a Portland-based developer of a digital health platform that uses computer-vision technology for body-motion assessment, said Tuesday that it has raised $600,000 in a pre-seed funding round that was oversubscribed. The company was founded in 2018 by University of Maine students Justin Hafner and David Holomakoff, who won the Greenlight Maine Collegiate Challenge in 2019. In Tuesday s announcement, KinoTek said it will use funding raised in its first round to launch its first product, called Move.ly, to the public later this year. Investors include IeAD Sports and Health Tech Partners, Tavistock Group, Maine Technology Institute and independent angel investors. “Every dollar of this round is what we consider ‘smart money, said Hafner. Recent advances in entrepreneurship and training in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, are bringing new career opportunities to Maine. But some people worry that a persistent gap in the workforce prevents the state s burgeoning STEM industries from finding the talent they need. That was the subject taken on by a panel of STEM experts in a webinar this week, “The Future of STEM Jobs and Innovation in Maine.” It was hosted by the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and the Science is US, a nonprofit that brings together leaders in science, engineering, industry, higher education and labor.

Q&A: How broadband demand spurred growth of network mapping service

VETRO FiberMap is a Portland startup whose cloud-based fiber management software platform is used by telecommunication companies to plan, map and manage their fiber optic networks.  The platform enables people who need fiber network information from engineers to sales and marketing personnel to access data remotely, using a web browser. Will Mitchell and Sean Myers launched the company in 2016 to meet the needs of an increasing number of small and mid-size internet service providers, municipalities, electric cooperatives and other broadband providers. Today, the company, a C corporation, serves hundreds of customers around the world. In 2020, as the need for internet access skyrocketed, VETRO raised $2.5 million and is now expanding its technical team.

The Planning Board voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend zoning amendments that would allow Redfern Properties to build an 18-story apartment building in the heart of the downtown. The proposed 190-foot-tall high-rise at 200 Federal St. would have 265 apartments, an infusion of housing in a tight real estate market that the developer says is not about to cool off.
