It was
announced this morning (6 January) by the Roux family that the hugely influential chef restaurateur had died, having been unwell ‘for a while’.
In the hours since the news broke, social media has been flooded with memories and praise for the late chef.
Gordon Ramsay, who trained at Roux’s Michelin-starred London Mayfair restaurant Le Gavroche during the late 1980s and early 1990s and has operated out of the same office building as him for the last decade, described Roux as the man who installed Gastronomy in Britain .

He later moved to London and opened the restaurant Le Gavroche with his brother Michel Roux.
The restaurant was much acclaimed and was the first in the UK to win one, two and three Michelin stars.
Serving French-inspired cuisine, it had set records by winning all three Michelin stars by 1982.

It was also reportedly a favourite dining spot of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
As well as producing much-loved menus, Albert and his brother set up the Roux Scholarship to help chefs entering the industry.
He helped train talent including celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White.

Tributes have been paid to Albert Roux, the chef and ‘culinary great’ credited with revolutionising restaurant culture in the UK alongside his brother Michel, who has died at the age of 85.
The pair were most renowned for their London restaurant Le Gavroche, which they opened in 1967 using Albert’s savings and money borrowed from friends. In 1982, it became the first in the UK to be awarded three Michelin stars.
Many of the UK restaurant scene’s leading figures worked for the brothers, including Gordon Ramsay, who wrote on Instagram: ‘So, so sad to hear about the passing of this legend, the man who installed gastronomy in Britain.’
