Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin Former Commissioner of Police, Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, has asserted that Jamaica s onerous bureaucratic system is facilitating corruption, resulting in a major issue for the country. Speaking at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Ocho Rios, Lewin said the intense bureaucracy provides a window for individuals to engage in corruption. Corruption is a major issue, but let s not stop there. Look we all know the type of things that happen. Who corrupts the police? Who corrupts the customs officer? Who corrupts whosoever? quizzed Lewin. But then again, why do people feel the need to corrupt? It s because you have set up a system that s so onerous, that is so difficult (that) it lends itself to corruption, and it s a problem that feeds on itself, he opined.

CMU students still unable to register for classes - despite gov t promises

Spread the love Despite repeated assurances from the government, students at the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) in Jamaica have said that they are still unable to register for classes and receive their degrees a week on. Last Monday, the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Lionel “Max” Hurst explained that the government had agreed to pay tuition for the students at a specific rate, which was paid during the students’ first two years at the learning institution. However, he said the school sought to change the agreement in the third year of the students’ study. Hurst said the issue was further complicated after multiple high-ranking officials at the school were slapped with charges in connection with a multimillion-Jamaican-dollar fraud and corruption scandal.
