Today, President Paul Kagame attended the official launch of the partnership between the African Union (AU), Africa CDC and MasterCard Foundation, the Saving Lives and Livelihoods initiative. Held by a virtual conference, the president delivered the following address. First of all, I want to say congratulations to everyone involved in this historic partnership to strengthen Africa’s public health institutions. I thank the Mastercard Foundation for this commitment, especially the CEO, Reeta Roy, and the entire board of directors. I also commend Chairperson Moussa Faki and the African Union Commission, in particular the Africa CDC, led by Dr Nkengasong. We do not take for granted how much hard work is involved to turn such an ambitious idea into reality.

The Mastercard Foundation has announced that it will deploy $1.3 billion over the next three years in partnership with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to save the lives and livelihoods of millions of people in Africa and hasten the economic recovery of the continent. The Saving Lives and Livelihoods initiative will acquire vaccines for at least 50 million people, support the delivery of vaccinations to millions more across the continent, lay the groundwork for vaccine manufacturing in Africa through a focus on human capital development, and strengthen the Africa CDC. “Ensuring equitable access and delivery of vaccines across Africa is urgent.
