Selma Stories: Let's play a game — or watch one | Selma Enterprise

A few sporting events the last few weeks captured my attention. First, we saw Selma’s football Bears stage a valiant, gutsy second-half comeback to pull ahead of Kingsburg in the annual rivalry game. Then the Vikings kicker sealed a two-point victory for Kingsburg, 17-15 in the final seconds.  A day later I watched as Fresno Pacific University, coached by Selma High grad George Rodriguez, lost a 4-3 heart-breaker against Academy of Art from San Francisco in NCAA women’s tennis. Both of those outcomes disappointed me because my heart was with the Bears and the Sunbirds for personal reasons. I have coached at Selma High, my daughter graduated from there and in general I have followed Bears sports for many years.

Expanding Cal Grant Would Help A Quarter Million Older Students And Cost Hundreds Of Millions More Dollars Sunday, April 25, 2021 | Sacramento, CA Stephen Kodur, a student at Reedley College, was denied a Cal Grant due to time-out-of-high-school restrictions. Older students such as Kodur stand to benefit from an expansion of the state’s financial aid program. Gary Kazanjian for CalMatters At age 30, Stephen Kodur is on his fourth stab at college in 12 years. He’s been attending class until his savings run out, pausing to work and build up cash, and repeating. Though his federal financial aid application says that he has the highest need, he’s not eligible for the main state aid program because he began community college several years after finishing high school.
