In the movie Mary Poppins, the title character sings that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. Now, Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers have shown how a radioactive sugar combined with a widely used imaging technology could soon help physicians make the medicine work better by enabling them to rapidly detect and monitor infections from the largest group of bacterial pathogens threatening humans.
The new imaging tool uses positron emission tomography commonly known as a PET scan to noninvasively find and track dangerous infections from the microbial family Enterobacterales, a group that includes the Escherichia coli strains that cause food poisoning; Klebsiella pneumoniae, a cause of pneumonia and a severe threat to patients weakened from COVID-19; and Yersinia pestis, the scourge behind the Black Death pandemic of plague in the 14th century that wiped out 75% of the world s pop
A Reading woman died early Tuesday of injuries suffered when her car collided with a pickup truck Sunday in Exeter Township, Berks County acting Coroner Jonn M. Hollenbach said.
Stacey Ehrhardt, 45, was pronounced dead at 1:35 a.m. in Reading Hospital by a trauma doctor. She died of multiple injuries, and the coronersâ office ruled her death as accidental, Hollenbach said.
Exeter police said Ehrhardt was driving west in the 5200 block of Oley Turnpike Road between Glen Oley Drive and Ritters Road when she lost control on a curve, and the car spun into the opposite lane. A westbound pickup truck driven by Mark Kugler, 55, of Oley collided nose-first with the passenger side of the car, police said.
COVID-19 continues to dominate the news, but itâs important to remember other life-and-death health issues remain just as urgent as theyâve always been.
High on the list is organ and tissue donation. As the medical community marks National Donate Life Month, itâs a good time to remind people that agreeing to be a donor is an easy way to make a huge difference in othersâ lives.
Why is it so important to keep hammering home a message that few would dispute? The advocacy group Donate Life Pennsylvania has reported that while 95% of people say they support organ donation, only about half of eligible Pennsylvanians sign up to become donors. Without action in a situation like this, expressions of support are meaningless.
