Kate Winslet said it was incredible Banksy had chosen Reading Prison for his latest piece as she joined calls to turn the old jail into an arts venue.
The Oscar-winning actress is supporting a theatre group hoping to stop the site being knocked down for housing.
Winslet, who grew up in Reading, promised to perform on opening night if the plans became a reality.
Banksy s painting of an escaping prisoner - possibly resembling famous inmate Oscar Wilde - appeared last week.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW: Reading Gaol as seen from The Blade. READING Borough Council (RBC) last night gave its official seal of approval for a new bid to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for the Reading Gaol site. The preliminary terms of a conditional bid by the council to transform the empty prison into a beacon of arts, heritage and culture for Reading, were agreed by councillors in the closed session of last night’s Policy Committee meeting (March 8). The bid will now be submitted by March 15, in accordance with the period of exclusivity afforded to the council by the MoJ.
