I’m just wondering why The Columbian grants space to such nonsensical letters as the one from Robert Kerr in Tuesday’s paper (“Does Biden know what he is doing?,” Our Readers’ Views, April 27). About President Biden he states: “He always looks like a robot. Very obvious his puppet strings are controlled by the far left.”
Is that the extent of the criticism you have of our president, Mr. Kerr? How is it obvious to you and where is your proof that “his puppet strings are controlled by the far left”? You didn’t say. Calling Roy Schimelpfenig’s comments “thoughtful and intelligent” is akin to calling Donald Trump’s utterances “well-thought out and purposeful.” This voter (me) is very grateful for the fact that the voting majority of this country finally saw through this Trump charlatan and that, under this new president, we’re on th

In a recent letter to the editor the writer argues that the Founding Fathers wanted a safeguard to prevent tyranny (“Second Amendment is a safeguard,” Our Readers’ Views, April 20). This was a real concern in 1791, the year the amendment was written as part of the Bill of Rights. As for protection against foreign powers, that’s what our costly U.S. military is for.

In Carl Scheuffele’s letter “Revise Second Amendment” (Our Readers’ Views, April 19) he mentions hunting twice and implies that the reason for the adoption of the Second Amendment was the necessity of having a firearm to hunt with. This is an often-stated point by those who want to restrict or eliminate gun ownership. It is of course completely false. It is misdirection. The founders understood that any and all governments have the potential and even the tendency to devolve into tyranny. They thoughtfully put in place many checks and balances and safeguards to prevent and/or combat tyranny. The Second Amendment is one of those safeguards. It was never about hunting.

Regarding Tana Aichele’s letter to the editor, “Executive order is a waste of energy” (Our Readers’ Views, April 14), I wonder where she was when former President Trump was tacitly building his legacy via a long list of executive orders? Did she have her head in the sand like the rest of (what was once known as) the Republican Party? We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions.
