The race to become World Champion in Las Vegas may have taken all year, but we’re just eight eliminations from finding our who will wear the crown… at least for a couple of days!
The final nine players are set for a Las Vegas at the Rio showdown on December 28th, which takes place just two days before the 30th December showdown between the WSOP.com and GGPoker World Champions. That heads-up showdown will produce the ‘Hybrid’ world champion, awarding them an extra $1 million.

We told you yesterday that the final 71 players included numerous big-name pros. Players such as Dan Zack, Ryan Laplante, Nick Schulman, and other familiar faces bagged chips and advanced to Day 2. But outside of Upeshka De Silva, the Day 1 chip leader, you likely won’t recognize any other final-table competitor’s name.

Nick Schulman, the popular player and poker commentator, is among the many familiar faces advancing to Day 2 of the 2020 WSOP Main Event. The world-championship event produced a higher-than-expected turnout, with more than 700 players in the field.

The hybrid event (a mix of online and live play) kicked off on Nov. 29 on GGPoker for international players. That separate, but connected, tournament has already played down to its final table, which takes place Dec. 15 at King’s Casino in the Czech Republic, site of the canceled WSOP Europe series.

Day 1 of the most prestigious WSOP Main Event since… well, summer, has arrived and despite there being nowhere near the same sort of prizepool, the name alone means that the hype is off the charts.
With the winner of this ‘Vegas Vacation’ style Main Event playing off against the eventual winner of the GGPoker ‘European Vacation’ final in just a couple of days’ time, anticipation of some sort of clash of the titans on December 30th is everybody in poker – and particularly the World Series of Poker – wants to see.
