HUNTINGTON â A seat on the local school board will soon be vacant.
Carole Garrison, who has served on the Cabell County Board of Education since July 2018, announced her resignation, effective March 31, during Tuesdayâs meeting.
Superintendent Ryan Saxe said the process to find a replacement to finish Garrisonâs term will begin as soon as possible.
âDr. Garrison has been a tremendously valuable board member and very astute to the needs of our students. They were always the center of her focus, and she will definitely be missed,â Saxe said.
âAt this time, the school board will post a vacancy to fill that seat for the remainder of her term, and that information will be forthcoming at a future board meeting,â he added.
HUNTINGTON â A new elementary school will be built on a property that has been without a tenant for decades.
During their regular meeting Tuesday, Cabell County Board of Education members voted to give authorization to Superintendent Ryan Saxe to move forward with the necessary actions to acquire the former Barboursville Brick Co. property near Riverview Drive, where they plan to build the new Davis Creek Elementary School.
The current Davis Creek Elementary is located just outside of Barboursville on Alternate W.Va. Route 10.
The decision was met with applause by school staff in attendance and some even got a little emotional after the vote, visibly expressing their thanks to board members for the decision.
The decision was approved following an executive session during Tuesdayâs meeting of the BOE.
The administrative leave is effective âuntil a resolution is reached,â but no additional details on the situation were made available upon request and Superintendent Ryan Saxe could not confirm or deny that the situation would be addressed at a future public board meeting.
Barbara Carlton, a retired principal in Cabell County, is acting principal while Jarrell is on leave.
Additionally, board members approved the suspension, without pay, of professional employee Jacob Jude, effective Feb. 17, âuntil an adequate resolution is reached.â Details about the suspension were not released.
