The Vancouver Canucks are trying to break the internet.
Sbisa, who was dealt to the Canucks as a part of the Ryan Kesler blockbuster deal, has been extended three years. His annual cap hit will come out to $3.6M AAV, with the contract broken up into $3.2 million the first year, $3.6 million the second, and $4 million the third. Heâs second on the team in both hits and blocked shots recording 149 and 127, respectively and although thereâs a sense that this may be a slight overpayment, the 25-year old blue liner still has room to grow. Heâs been a decent contributor for the team over the year since getting dealt, and with the contract lasting until heâs 28, this is about what one would expect in a deal for a young blue liner. Originally a first round pick by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Sbisa was also a part of the deal that sent Joffrey Lupul to Anaheim and Chris Pronger to Philadelphia in 2009.
Before he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks, Ryan Kesler confirmed a deal was in place for the Vancouver Canucks to send him to the Pittsburgh Penguins seven years ago.
There had been many reports and rumours about what took place at the time, but this is the first detailed public recollection from Kesler, who wanted out of Vancouver. Kesler, who had a no-trade clause in his contract, was not moved at the 2014 trade deadline by then-general manager Mike Gillis.
The rumour at the time was that Canucks ownership blocked a potential trade at the deadline. Gillis was fired a month later, and new GM Jim Benning ended up settling for a trade with the Anaheim Ducks that summer.
Vancouver Canucks
After going through the best trade deadline deals in Canucks history, we need to keep it fair by going through the worst.
In fairness, there’s no loss on here that was as monumental as Cam Neely for Barry Pederson.

I would argue that the Canucks trade deadline wins were greater than their losses. As you can see below, there’s not a ton separating the worst trades here, forcing me to cheat a bit with the number one pick on this list.
The moral of the story of these trades shouldn’t be new…trading draft picks for old guys usually doesn’t work out.
