Why do teams constantly recycle people (WFT and Hurney) versus looking at new blood or someone outside of the inner circle of retreads?
It’s a fair question, T Ron Rivera did run the search in D.C., and the names the team cycled through were all connected to him. Both ex-Panthers GM Marty Hurney and Titans exec Ryan Cowden worked with him in Carolina, while ex-Lions GM/current 49ers exec Martin Mayhew shares an agent with him. But, really, I don’t have a huge issue with that. I think any coach, charged with leading a search, would seek that sort of alignment.
Washington interviews Marty Hurney for general manager job: report Follow Us
Question of the Day
By Matthew Paras - The Washington Times - Monday, January 18, 2021
Coach Ron Rivera and other members of the Washington Football Team met with Marty Hurney to discuss the team’s vacant general manager on Monday, according to a new report.
The NFL Network reported that Hurney is the “top candidate” for the vacancy. Washington has spent the last week interviewing candidates, speaking to Tennessee’s Ryan Cowden, San Francisco’s Martin Mayhew and have requested to speak with other candidates like Atlanta’s Nick Polk and the Chargers’ JoJo Wooden.

Rivera will still have power on the football side in the organization, having been hired to provide a coach-centric model, according to owner Dan Snyder. But Washington wanted to add a person to its front office to take some of the administrative burden off Rivera. Hurney handled the salary cap in Carolina, among other duties. Last offseason, Washington hired his former assistant from Carolina, Rob Rogers, to handle that role.
Washington also talked to former Detroit general manager Martin Mayhew, Tennessee s vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden and Washington s director of pro personnel Eric Stokes, among others. Rivera did not interview Kyle Smith, Washington s vice president of player personnel, who has been with the franchise for 11 years.

Though the 2020 NFL season is moving along at full speed into the playoffs, life in the NFC East has slowed down as this mark’s the first notebook of the offseason.
But off the field, there is still plenty to talk about around the division as coaching changes begin to impact each team.
The most notable one of this past week was the Philadelphia Eagles’ firing of Doug Pederson after five seasons with the team. He posted a 42-37-1 record during his time in Philly. This past season, the Eagles finished in last place in the NFC East with a 4-11-1 record. It was the worst season in Pederson’s tenure with the Eagles.
