Pakistan mountain region observes Ramadan in darkness after power cuts

KHAPLU, GHANCHE: In the mountainous region of Gilgit-Baltistan in northern Pakistan, daily power cuts of up to 20 hours or more in some districts have pushed locals to protest over having to observe Ramadan in darkness. Gilgit-Baltistan, an impoverished part of the larger Kashmir region, is the gateway of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) with high potential to generate energy from hydropower, but its residents have so far reaped few rewards of the $65 billion infrastructure project. When the province went to local assembly polls in November last year, Prime Minister Imran Khan promised to set up hydroelectric power plants. Last month, the region’s chief minister, Khalid Khurshid, gave the provincial secretary powers to ensure no power cuts during suhoor and iftar meals in Ramadan.

Two alleged killers of 7 family members arrested National April 21, 2021 NOWSHERA: The police claimed to have arrested two accused involved in the killing of seven members of a family, including two women, in Spinkani Sheikhi area in the district on Tuesday. District Police Officer Muhammad Iqbal Khan said that the special team, headed by Superintendent of Police (investigation) Khankhel, had launched an investigation into the case on scientific lines to arrest the accused. He said that the two accused identified as Mumraiz Ali and Arif, sons of Asal Khan, were arrested from the boundary area between Nowshera and Swabi districts. The DPO added that the arrest was made possible because of the facilitators held during the search operation conducted soon after the tragic incident. He said that raids were being conducted to arrest the remaining 10 accused nominated in the case.

ANF seized 425.253 kgs drugs valuing US$ 14.658 million in 29 operations Rawalpindi, March 16, 2021 (PPI-OT): Anti Narcotics Force Pakistan seized 425.253 Kgs narcotics valuing US $ 14.658 Million internationally, arrested 42 culprits including seven Afghan national, one Pakistani national lady and impounded 17 vehicles while conducting 29 counter-narcotics strikes throughout the country.
