Criminal gangs are monitoring social media posts by farmers to create “shopping lists” of tractors and quad bikes they then steal from farms.
Thieves are using the social media profiles to pinpoint farms where desirable machinery is kept before carrying out raids.
Offenders are also joining or “liking” farming Facebook pages, including community groups, rural watch groups, and police liaison groups to stay one step ahead of farmers trying to prevent criminal activity.
The findings are contained in a new study – Illicit Entrepreneurialism in the Countryside (PDF) – by Kate Tudor, a criminologist at the University of Northumbria.

With rising temperatures and drier conditions expected, many parts of the UK countryside are at higher risk of blazes from barbecues and abandoned campfires, rural insurer NFU Mutual warns.
Last year moorland, grass and forest fires resulted in devastating damage to wide areas of the British countryside and served as a stark warning about the dangers of wildfires.
Rebecca Davidson, rural affairs specialist at NFU Mutual, said: “Dry, sunny weather and huge numbers of people descending on the countryside increases the risk of fires – putting the lives of people, farm animals and wildlife in danger as well as damaging valuable crops.

It s an election year and Medford candidates were out in front of voters last week, albeit online.
Our Revolution Medford held a one hour video-conference Spring Candidates Endorsement Forum Wednesday, May 5 in which 5 City Council candidates and three School Committee candidates participated.
“It’s great learning from first-time candidates and incumbents,” said Rebecca Davidson, co-coordinator of the group’s Electoral Working Group.
All City Council and School Committee seats are up for election in November.
Davidson said OR Medford is running a coordinated campaign of candidates they endorse as an effort “to leverage our collective resources to elect a progressive majority on the City Council and School Committee.”
