Mogwai: As the Love Continues

Bandcamp / Buy A Mogwai melody always sounds like a eulogy for someone you’ve never met. Whether played on a hushed piano or pushed through Stuart Braithwaite and Barry Burns’ guitars, their writing is sad in a way that’s not personal: full of familiar emotions, but still opaque about the specifics. After 25 years, 10 studio albums, a dozen or so EPs, and plentiful film scores, Mogwai’s fingerprints have become easy to recognize. As they’ve aged into elder statesmen of post-rock—two terms they would undoubtedly hate—they’ve become like a football team running the Air Raid offense: They only call a handful of plays, but when they run them well, they’re basically impossible to stop.

Plus, their luminescent compositions largely have no lyrics to convey any messaging.

Imagine no more. The eighth album from the Hold Steady fits that bizarre brief. They sound like a classic rock band, with frontman Craig Finn not really singing so much as ranting some of the best street poetry this side of Tom Waits. “There was an early morning meet-up at the mansion on the mountain, the master still had glitter on his face,” Finn spits on the opening line of the opening track, dragging you in from the get-go with no set-up and demanding your attention. Lovelorn losers and damaged damsels have always populated his songs, and
