With fertiliser, he is using microbes to fix nitrogen from the air and also release phosphorus already bound up in soils. To achieve this, he wanted a direct drill that could place these microbes next to the seed, as well as drill two crops at the same time accurately.

But the commission warned farmer John Price that its decision has no bearing on ongoing investigations being conducted by other government agencies, including the Environment Agency (EA) and Natural England. A Forestry Commission spokesman said: “Following an investigation, we can confirm that the felling operations were undertaken with the authority of an approved conditional felling licence and no further action is to be taken in respect of the felling at this time.”

Hello February, goodbye “Veganuary” – the whole month dedicated by some to promoting a vegan lifestyle. Encouraging this drastic change in diet at a time when the UK is at its most limited on fresh produce may not be ideal, but I still take my hat off to anybody who can take it up, let alone maintain it after the month has ended. You might be surprised to hear me say that, as a mixed farmer, I used to be anti-veganism. All I saw was extreme people slating us and promoting skewed facts. But as with so many things, I’ve come to the conclusion it’s is a small minority giving the majority a bad rep.
