Late on a Friday night, eight dog enthusiasts and their pet pooches prowl several dark alleys in New York s Lower East Side with one mission: to hunt and kill as many rats as possible.
The dogs, mostly terriers, pant and strain at their leashes before diving into trash bags and emerging seconds later with a convulsing rodent between their teeth.

The governing body of Virginiaâs community college system is urging two institutions â including Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge â to reconsider their decisions to maintain the names of their schools that honor people who advocated for segregation or owned slaves.
The State Board for Community Colleges initiated a process last July of having colleges examine the names of their schools and buildings. Of the 23 community colleges in Virginia, five of them are named after segregationists, slave owners and confederates. Three of them have already begun the process to change their names.
In addition to the call-volunteer firefighters from the Williamstown Fire District and Forest Warden and their brethren from departments throughout the region, plenty of civilians stepped up to do what they could to. I m in my 19th year, and we ve had a few forest fires, brush fires, and I gotta say this is probably the largest response we ve had from our community as a whole, Williamstown Fire Chief Craig Pedercini said on Saturday afternoon. The whole thing the food, the drinks, everything, you name it. I know Andi Bryant did a good job putting the message out [on Facebook], and all of a sudden, people just wanted to help. So, it s awesome.
