A project in the works for about four years is moving forward as Edinburg city leaders broke ground Monday on a new recreation center.
The new and improved El Tule Recreation Center will house three indoor basketball courts, something that members of the community are looking forward to.
This new facility will not only service area young people, but people of all ages with its very own walking trail and dog park. You can drop off your kids here at the basketball gymnasium to play a game or a volleyball game and the parents can go for a walk or you can bring the dogs, Edinburg Mayor Richard Molina said. Take them for a walk here in the dog park so it s a multipurpose facility.

An attempt to end abortions at a city in the Rio Grande Valley dies on the dais after council members refuse to put a motion forward.
The Edinburg City Council let die an ordinance that would outlaw abortions and make Edinburg a sanctuary city for the unborn die at a Tuesday meeting after an hours of intense public comment from both abortion and anti-abortion activists and discussion among council members.
The ordinance would outlaw providing aid, funding, or transportation to abortion providers, among other stipulations. There are 30 other cities in Texas that have similar ordinances, like Lubbock.

A local doctor died after suffering a heart attack while exercising on July 3, 1996.
Now, 25 years later, the community came together to unveil a monument in honor of Dr. Gilberto Diaz at the park named after him.
“This monument is not really just for him,” Diaz’s former wife, Patra Diaz-Alvarado, said. “It is for him, but it s also for the whole community and hopefully it will be an inspiration to young people. )
Diaz s family hopes the monument will inspire children in the community to dream big and pursue aspirations of working in the medical field.

Edinburg Mayor Richard Molina announced Thursday he is seeking reelection for Edinburg’s top seat on the city council.
Molina was first elected in November 2017 after serving as a city council member.
In a letter addressed to residents, Molina noted the growth of the city since his administration started and the city’s response to deliver assistance to residents during the pandemic.
“This is my home. I didn’t run for office to become a politician. I ran for office to serve the city I love,” Molina stated in the news release.
