Over the past seven decades, New Zealanders have become increasingly dependent on cars to move around – a trend embraced in Hamilton where more than 85 per cent of city trips are made in cars. But creating a seismic shift in the city’s transport network won’t come cheap, with some estimates putting the cost to ratepayers and taxpayers at more than $900 million over the next three decades.

Benjamin Wilson took up cycling during the Covid-19 lockdown and uses his bike to get around Hamilton. The reality of biking in Hamilton is something polytech student Benjamin Wilson knows all too well.
“He was very polite, very interested - I was just in awe,” says Jane. “We asked him if he would mind signing our copies, which he very graciously did. It was only a ten or 15-minute meeting but it was a huge honour to meet this really special man.”
Naval expert Dr Richard Porter, honorary curator at the Britannia Museum, agrees it was a privilege to have met the Duke.
“He was very pleasant, quite quiet and I remember he just had this air of peace about him,” says Richard, talking about the time Prince Philip came to Dartmouth to open the Britannia Museum in 1999. “I took him past a portrait we have of Lord Mountbatten and he immediately exclaimed: ‘Ah, Uncle Dickie!’”.

Skateboarders who use Central Park s skatepark - especially it s faster lanes - have urged parents to be aware of where their young children are after a child suffered nasty injuries in a collision.
The extended skate park, which sits close to the Outland Road entrance near the Life Centre, has long been a popular spot for skaters, BMX riders, free-runners and skateboarders every day since it first opened in late 2011 and then enjoyed an overhaul in 2018.
