Anthony Hughes Jr., 15, was fatally shot while walking home, about an hour after attending a meeting at the King Kennedy Boys and Girls Club.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – National media seized upon the story of Anthony Hughes Jr.’s shooting last week, all using some variation of the headline: “Teen fatally shot after meeting about another teen’s death.”
It’s the kind of headline that commands attention for its disturbing irony, and also because of what it conveys about a city experiencing its highest homicide rate in decades. It’s a headline that says if you are a child in Cleveland today, chances are good that the violence will find you. Even if you gather with your peers to condemn it.
