Former U S Ambassador Doesn t See Iran Nuclear Deal Happening This Year as Escalations Mount

You can t act with impunity. Be careful, President Joe Biden told reporters Friday, describing his message to Iran after he ordered airstrikes against buildings in eastern Syria that the Pentagon says were being used by Iranian-backed militia.   The strikes were in retaliation for a Feb. 15 attack that saw rockets hit Erbil International Airport in Iraq, which houses coalition military forces. The attack, which Western and Iraqi officials attribute to Iranian-backed militia forces, killed one contractor with the U.S.-led coalition and injured several others, including an American service member. Iran rejects accusations of its involvement. None of this bodes well for what the Biden administration considers a foreign policy priority: a return to the Iranian nuclear deal, also known as the JCPOA, that was penned under the Obama administration with several world powers and lifted economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs to its nuclear program.

The UN Should Protect Human Rights, Not Human Rights Abusers | Opinion Bradley Bowman and David May On 3/1/21 at 5:30 AM EST Secretary of State Antony Blinkenannounced on Wednesday that the United States will seek membership at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in January 2022 as part of the Biden administration s commitment to putting human rights at the center of U.S. foreign policy. To be sure, the United States is at its best when it strives to model human rights at home and stand up for those principles abroad. And when Washington leads and assembles like-minded countries to advance international human rights together, we are more likely to succeed.

Republican Jews oppose Biden s moves on Iran – The Forward

Secretary of State Tony Blinken promised during his Senate confirmation hearings last month that the Biden administration would not rush to re-enter the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and would only do so with input from Israel and other Middle East allies. So it was something of a surprise when Blinken, America’s top diplomat, told his British, French and German counterparts that the administration is prepared to engage in talks with Iran on returning to full compliance of the nuclear deal. The turnabout, along with the administration’s recent move to rescind former President Donald Trump’s imposition of harsh sanctions against Iran, reveals some division within Biden’s national-security team and may give Republicans opportunity to frame Israel’s security as a wedge issue as they seek to broaden Jewish support ahead of the midterm elections.
