The boys are back in the ALP as they attempt to force Jodi McKay out of office and hold a ballot that excludes Labor Party members at large (“I won’t go, says McKay, as MP quits over dossier”, May 26). When the stench of corruption from the Obeid years still hangs over Labor in NSW, they have as leader a woman who stood up to the boys in the ALP at the cost of her seat in Parliament. That takes courage as well as ethics. In a time when the number of Liberal and National MPs in NSW are under a cloud regarding allegations of corruption and sexual assault, one may think that a demonstrated cleanskin might be an attractive option. Not for the Labor boys in Macquarie Street and Sussex Street. No wonder they lag in the polls.

Here’s what happened: I was looking at pictures someone sent me from Germany, and one of them was particularly striking. Winter, a dark forest or maybe a park, and a narrow path winding its way right to a church, and a giant Christmas tree all decked out in glorious lights, and the sky above looks not like Germany but more like Gzhel porcelain or Vyatka toys, dark blue with enormous cold stars. On my tiny screen, the tree was lit like a bonfire, and it looked like a perfect postcard if you wanted to, say, wish someone a happy new year; all it needed was a couple of words appropriate to the occasion.
Redesmere and Capesthorne Hall
Start out at Redesmere, a lake just five miles south of Aldlerley Edge, head north and explore the extensive grounds of Capesthorne Hall, an 18th century country house built in the Tudor revival style.
