Returning Alan Donnelly denies publicity stunt at first council meeting after suspension

Updated: 11/03/2021, 6:55 am © Richard Frew / DCT Media Shamed Aberdeen councillor Alan Donnelly has denied backing his critic’s budget proposals as a “publicity stunt” on his first day back after a year-long suspension. The Torry and Ferryhill member was barred by the Standards Commission after being convicted of sexual assault. Yesterday’s council meeting was the first time he has been involved since last March, and he almost immediately entered the spotlight by backing the Liberal Democrat budget. Put forward by one of his fiercest critics, group leader Ian Yuill, the spending plan had been expected to be seconded by fellow Lib Dem Steve Delaney.

Sex offender Donnelly accused of publicity stunt at budget meeting

Updated: 10/03/2021, 7:49 pm © Richard Frew / DCT Media The return of a convicted sex offender to council meetings in Aberdeen almost overshadowed vital talks on balancing the local authority’s books this afternoon. Alan Donnelly, convicted of sexual assault in December 2019, announced his return to the fold by thrusting himself firmly into the spotlight. At his first meeting after a year-long suspension, the Torry and Ferryhill member was accused of a “publicity stunt”. Now an independent, the former Conservative depute provost beat Liberal Democrat Steve Delaney to seconding his group leader’s budget. Ian Yuill was expected to be backed by Mr Delaney – but Mr Donnelly got his bid in first.

Alan McHugh, His Majesty’s Theatre’s favourite pantomime dame, is starring in The Real Dames of Pantoland this festive season. Alan will be playing Dame Helen St Mirren, head of the Real Dames, and will be creating mischief and mayhem with his fellow Real Dames. He said: “Though originally from Paisley, Helen St Mirren is Aberdeen through and through and will be representing the north-east in Pantoland this Christmas. Dame Judy Stench will be no match for me if it comes down to a confrontation.”
