Boxing World Qualifiers for Tokyo cancelled
The International Olympic Committee Boxing Task Force (BTF) announced Monday via a virtual meeting that the World Qualifiers for the Tokyo Olympics has been canceled.
The BTF has taken over the function of organizing the boxing competitions in the Olympics after the International Boxing Association (AIBA) was suspended by the Olympic body in 2019. The suspension remains in effect.
The tournament was originally scheduled for May 2020 in Paris, France but was postponed for this year because of the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Tokyo Olympics hopeful Nesthy Petecio calls her best friend, the one she trusts whether they do something serious or funny, the person she wants to take care of her baby – if the time comes.
But that one person is gone now. Gone too soon.
Alexcel Dargantes, 24, passed away Saturday evening, the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) announced Monday. She was a member of the ABAP women’s team from 2013-2017.
Petecio, who has been in the training camp bubble in Laguna since last month, expressed her pain and sorrow in Facebook posts since Saturday, as well as her stories of friendship with Dargantes.

EIGHT-TIME Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) champion coach Chot Reyes is back in the league with the TNT Tropang GIGA.
Mr. Reyes, 57, was announced at the weekend to take the head coaching duties for Smart Communications’ pro basketball team when the new PBA season unfurls later this year.
It will be a homecoming for the five-time PBA coach of the year and former Gilas Pilipinas bench tactician with the franchise, which he helped win four league titles, the last one in the 2011-2012 season (Philippine Cup). “It’s like a homecoming for Chot. TNT is bringing back coach Chot Reyes in a bid to end the franchise’s long PBA dry spell.
The Tropang Giga made the announcement Saturday, Feb. 13, as they decided to go with the multi-time champion mentor after two seasons under Bong Ravena and active consultant Mark Dickel.
“It’s like a homecoming for Chot. He is a coach that gave us four championships. We look forward to a successful relationship with Coach Chot,” said TNT governor and PBA chairman Ricky Vargas in a statement.
Vargas added that Reyes “wanted Dickel to stay on as an active consultant” but the former New Zealand national player and understudy of Gilas Pilipinas program director Tab Baldwin “decided to look for new opportunities and recuperate from his recent operation in Las Vegas.”

Also to be discussed is the coming rookie draft, which will be the first official activity of the league this season, and the league s participation in the inaugural staging of the rebooted East Asia Super League (EASL).
Alaska governor Richard Bachmann is expected to preside over how the PBA will launch the 3x3 program, of which he serves as chairman. The league is looking to stage the tournament ahead of the season kick-off this April.
Meanwhile, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al S. Panlilio, who also serves as Meralco representative to the board, will present the case whether a special Gilas drafting will be held for the second straight time.
