American Airlines is bringing back its daily flights between the Chicago area and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, the fourth airline at SRQ scheduled to fly between Chicago and the Sarasota area.
The local airport said in a Tuesday press release that American has boosted its seasonal service to Chicago O Hare International Airport to fly over the summer because of increased demand.
The service was suspended last year because of low interest from passengers resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, Nichelle Barrett, a spokesperson for American Airlines, said in an email. Flights are currently scheduled to run through Nov. 6, Barrett said, and on Saturdays from June 3 to Sept. 7, the flights will operate twice per day.

Southwest to add seasonal flights from SRQ to Milwaukee, Chicago Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. By ABC7 Staff | February 25, 2021 at 12:13 PM EST - Updated February 25 at 12:13 PM
SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport will add a weekly nonstop flight to Milwaukee and a second daily nonstop to Chicago Midway for this spring, it was announced Thursday.
The additional daily Southwest Airlines flight to Chicago will start March 11 and will go through May 7. The Saturday flight to Milwaukee Mitchell Airport, also by Southwest Airlines, will start April 17 through May 8.
“It is exciting to see Southwest Airlines continue to add service at SRQ. Having an additional flight frequency will provide passengers more choices when planning their travels,” Rick Piccolo, president and CEO of the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, said in a news release.
Southwest Airlines, which just started air service at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport last week, will offer seasonal service to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from mid-April to early May, the airport announced on Thursday.
Service between Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport in Wisconsin is scheduled to run Saturdays from April 17 through May 8.
Southwest will also run a second daily flight to Chicago Midway International Airport in March and up to two times a day in April.
A Sarasota-Bradenton-to-Milwaukee route performed well via AirTran Airways before that airline was purchased by Southwest and went dark at the local airport, said Elliott Falcione, executive director of the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
