Almost certainly, Auston Matthews will be a finalist for the Hart Trophy, as the NHL’s most valuable player.
Barring some kind of drastic change with Connor McDavid, Matthews won’t win the award but is likely to end up in the top three, which will put him in a place few Maple Leafs of the modern era have ever known.

Doug Gilmour finished second to Mario Lemieux for the Hart in 1993, then a year later placed fourth behind winner, Sergei Fedorov. Darryl Sittler finished third once in Hart voting. Guy Lafleur won the award that year, in 1978. Mats Sundin never finished higher than eighth on the Hart ballot and Wendel Clark never did receive a Hart vote.
The NHL trade deadline is Monday, and because this season is so unusual, each team is operating under its own unique circumstance. For this week s NHL Power Rankings, we identified a sticking point for every team heading into the deadline.
How we rank: The ESPN hockey editorial staff submits selections ranking teams 1 to 31 taking into account game results, injuries and upcoming schedule and those results are tabulated in the list featured here.
Note: Previous ranking for each team refers to our Week 11 edition, published on March 31. Points percentages are through the games of April 6.

As a die-hard, green-and-blue-bleeding, un-ashamed homer, my first response to the Canucks early departure from the post-season was to find the positives. The first I could find: Roberto Luongo will ask for a trade. Let’s be honest, Luongo is a great goalie, but Cory Schneider is the future. Much younger, and not locked in to a contract that is longer than
War and Peace, Schneider has the potential to be the number one in Vancouver for years to come. However, hopefully Gillis will learn from his foolishness, and refrain from handing out 12-year contracts like they are going out of style.

In recent years the Rangers have added Jacob Trouba, Adam Fox, Ryan Lindgren, and Libor Hajek through trades. The crowd on the Rangers blue-line is only growing as K’Andre Miller, and Tarmo Reunanen have all made their presence known this season.
Jacob Trouba came at the steepest price in the way of a 1st round pick and Neal Pionk. Ryan Lindgren was a smaller piece in the Rick Nash deal. Adam Fox was modern day highway robbery for 2 picks, neither of which was a 1st rounder. And Libor Hajek was one of the pieces in the Ryan McDonagh trade that included a first round pick the team used to draft Nils Lundkvist. All great moves indeed.
