A SOUTHAMPTON MP has called for the redevelopment of a city park following regular traffic chaos caused by ferry delays. Royston Smith, MP for Southampton Itchen, is calling on the re-development of Mayflower Park and the relocation of the Red Funnel terminal after a weekend of long delays and traffic jams. As previously reported over the weekend, problems involving Red Funnel ferries caused long delays around Town Quay and Ocean Village as well as parts of the main shopping area. Motorists were urged to avoid the area as queues of vehicles waiting to use the Red Funnel services caused congestion on the roads.
University Hospital Southampton is also seeing high levels of demand. A spokesperson said the hospital was working with partners across the region, including ambulance services, to ensure it was prioritising patients who needed it most. They added: “The Emergency Department deals with people who are seriously ill or those who are facing a life-threatening emergency. “Making the right decision about the service you need will help you access the right healthcare treatment at the right time and help to ease the pressure on staff who are already working hard to care for patients who are extremely ill.” The pressures facing SCAS were revealed by the director of operations, Mark Ainsworth, who cited “intense demand” for the 999 and 111 services.

SHOCKING figures have revealed more than 10,000 children in Southampton were eligible for free school meals during the pandemic. Around three in 10 pupils in Southampton are receiving free school meals with thousands more youngsters joining the list as Covid took hold, figures show. The figures are at the highest level since comparable records began in 2015-16. But now, in a bid to help vulnerable households and fund free school meals throughout the summer holidays – one of the worst times for families in need – Southampton City Council has pledged nearly £850,000 towards supporting families in the city. A total of £847,874 will be used to fund free school meals throughout the summer holiday and help city residents pay for food, bills and other essential items.
