North Dakota governor approves fund for cleaner energy projects
The creation of a fund overseen by a newly formed Clean Sustainable Energy Authority is part of broader efforts by North Dakota officials to respond to shifting political and financial winds that have put the state s oil and coal industries on the defensive. Top Republican leaders celebrated the signing Monday as a landmark move to keep the state s fossil fuel sector competitive under realigning markets that have increasingly favored low emissions resources. (Bismarck, ND) Governor Burgum Monday signed legislation creating a Clean Sustainable Energy Fund to support low-emission technology projects and help provide a long-term, viable path forward for the state’s critical energy industry.
“House Bill 1452 will accelerate efforts to develop promising low-emission technologies, helping ensure that our energy industry can provide reliable, affordable baseload electricity for North Dakotans and the region for decades to come,” Burgum said. “By supporting projects such as carbon capture, utilization and storage, we can open up new areas of economic opportunity and employment for our state’s citizens.”
House Bill 1452 allocates $25 million from the state’s general fund to create a Clean Sustainable Energy Fund and establishes a Clean Sustainable Energy Authority, made up of eight voting members and eight technical advisers, to make recommendations to the North Dakota Industrial Commission for grant awards and loan programs.
