Inside The Chart: Top Guy

For most of its existence, Alcolu’s chief export was lumber. The small hamlet in west-central South Carolina began as a mill town in the late 19th century for employees of D.W. Alderman, a local timber magnate. Ribbons of railroad tracks still crisscross through the pines there, clacking with commerce from all corners of the state. The town takes its quirky name – it’s pronounced AL-co-lu – from a portmanteau of Alderman (“Al”); his business partner and brother-in-law, Colwell (“Co”); and his oldest daughter, Lula (“Lu”). With a population of 429 as of the 2010 census, Alcolu isn’t quite a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town. But it’s not far off.

Harvin Named First-Team AP All-America

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech punter Pressley Harvin III (Alcolu, S.C./Sumter) hauled in perhaps his most prestigious honor to date when he was named first-team All-America by the Associated Press on Monday. Harvin is the 20 th first-team AP All-American in Georgia Tech history and the first Yellow Jacket to earn the honor since defensive end Derrick Morgan in 2009. The AP has selected an All-America team every year since 1925. Harvin leads the nation with a 48.0-yard punting average this season. To put his whopping 48.0-yard average into perspective, the margin between Harvin’s average and the third-best average in the nation (46.7 – Washington State’s Oscar Draguicevich) is the same as the margin between Draguicevich and the nation’s eighth-best average (45.4 – San Diego State’s Tanner Kuljian).

Mailbag 12/23

Mailbag 12/23 Share this story Photo by Ryan M. Kelly/Getty Images Who are your offensive, defensive, and overall MVPs from this year? Oh, and special teams if it’s anyone other than PH3. - SullyGT Ben: On offense, while I think there is a case for Jahmyr Gibbs, I’m going to say Jeff Sims. The entire offense ran through him, and I think he had a lot more pressure on him since Tech actually has good running backs other than Gibbs. On defense, I will go with Jordan Domineck. Tech did not have much in terms of a pass rush, but what they did have mostly came from Domineck. On special teams, I’m gonna say Gavin Stewart. I think Tech has finally gotten a decent kicker and his brother is Brad Stewart. Gavin only went 2-for-3 on field goals, but he went 22-of-24 on PAT attempts, which is great, considering how bad Tech’s kicking game has been.

Tory Taylor Named Big Ten Punter of the Year

Tory Taylor Named Big Ten Punter of the Year Share this story PUNTING IS WINNING! Folks, all is right in the world. Rounding out this year’s Big Ten awards, in which Iowa’s offensive line was lauded, so too, is our favorite Australian and favorite American football newbie, Tory Taylor, who was named Big Ten Punter of the Year. It doesn’t get more Iowa football than that. I just try to catch the ball and kick it as far as I can. Worked like a charm. @torytaylor09 is the B1G Punter of the Year. That’s a pretty good strategy, and it clearly worked out for Taylor, who is the first Hawkeye and first freshman to win the award in its short 10 year history.
