A Detroit man who spent 48 years in prison for a fatal robbery pleaded no contest to second-degree murder Tuesday in an extraordinary compromise that settled his claim of innocence and allowed him to go free.
Ray Gray, 69, wasn t exonerated during the video court hearing. But the deal erased his previous first-degree murder conviction and life sentence, and immediately qualified him to go home for the first time since he was 21.
Gray seemed overwhelmed about his next turn, rubbing his forehead and crying softly as Judge Margaret Van Houten ended the Zoom hearing in a Detroit courtroom. A mask dangled from his right ear.

DETROIT – A man who spent close to 50 years in prison for a crime is finally walking away free. Ray Gray says he never committed the crime.
It was 1973 when Gray last tasted freedom. Richard Nixon was in office, the Vietnam War officially came to an end and the Elvis Aloha from Hawaii concert was seen on screens around the world.
Since then Gray and his family have fought to clear him of the murder. He’s finally a free man.

When Raymond Felton Gray was sent to prison for life on a murder conviction nearly 50 years ago platform shoes were the fashion rage and Watergate scandal-plagued President Richard Nixon was still in office.
On Tuesday, Gray officially became a free man following a plea deal that allowed him to plead no contest to a lesser murder offense.
Gray, 69, has been incarcerated since May 1973 after he was convicted of first-degree murder for the slaying of a reputed Detroit drug dealer, Ruben Bryant, in a Detroit apartment months earlier.
Gray, who was hoping for an exoneration, has spent 48 years of his life behind Michigan prison walls. He has tried for years to appeal the conviction. He walked out of the Muskegon Correctional Facility Tuesday afternoon a free man.
