Wildlife Conservation Society Firm wins rights to ticket sales at Kirirom, Prek Toal Mon, 11 January 2021 The Ministry of Environment awarded rights to ticket sales at Kirirom National Park and the Prek Toal bird sanctuary to locally-owned firm Lim Sok Cheng for 2021. Kirirom National Park covers 8,401ha in Kampong Speu province and is 44km from the provincial capital of the same name. Designated as Ramsar Site No 2245, Prek Toal covers 21,342ha in Battambang province’s Ek Phnom district and borders Siem Reap province. The area is home to more than 5,000 species of waterfowl today.

Industrial agriculture threatens a wetland oasis in Bolivia An oasis within dry Chiquitano forest in eastern Bolivia, Concepción Lake and its surrounding wetland provide valuable habitat for 253 bird, 48 mammal and 54 fish species. However, despite being officially listed as a protected area, cultivation of commodity crops like soy and sorghum is expanding and supplanting habitat. Agricultural activity is also linked to phosphate pollution in Concepción Lake, and some think it may also be contributing to the lake’s dramatic drop in water level. While the clearing is illegal, local government sources say those responsible are simply paying fines and refusing to stop.
