TRIBUTE Anirban Bora 1.6.1978-1.5.2021 When I learnt of Anirban passing away, I was half through my morning mug of coffee. The mug is special: it has a cartoon Ravan staring wide-eyed – all ten pairs.

A Once and Scattered Weave - Telegraph India

Big Story A once and scattered weave Identity politics is the most bandied about word this season. Politicians love it, strategists rock it, analysts roll it. But the people, they live it, for generations. The Sylhet story Upala Sen   |     |   Published 18.04.21, 12:44 AM I discovered the ochre book, which no one claimed to have brought home, sometime in the early months of the lockdown. A word on the cover beckoned. Sylhet. I recognised it from the long departed grandparents’ reminiscings; one of many names Dhaka, Barisal, Comilla, Poyogram. The resilience of secularism in Bangladesh

The resilience of secularism in Bangladesh Star file photo Vaishali Basu Sharma Vaishali Basu Sharma With a spiritual commitment to Islam and a cultural affiliation to being Bangalee, Bangladesh is a nation where the two concepts are not mutually exclusive. Founded on secular principles, Bangladesh has been heralded by the western world as an example of a model Muslim country, whose people have taken great pride in its unique syncretic nature. In fact, ethno-nationalism conflicting with Islamic religious nationalism was the very embodiment of the creation of Bangladesh. Although there have been occasional drifts towards religious extremism, the secular character has never been threatened seriously. The original constitution was secular. But after Bangladesh s Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated in 1975, successive governments chipped away the secular edifice. Secularism was removed from the constitut

An imagined recreation of a women s music conference in Calcutta in 1954

From the collection of Dinkar Manjeshwar. International Women’s Day has been marked in India on March 8 for several years, but it is only in the recent past that the world of Hindustani music seems to have joined in these celebrations. Sadly, much of this has to do with staging large, sponsored events, no different from any other event in the year, rather than addressing issues related specifically to women in general and women artiste in particular. There is a perfunctory inclusion of women performers in concerts held as part of these events, and in many cases, all the members of the ensemble are women. While the latter is a welcome change, I wonder why this should be restricted only to concerts held on this day. All-women ensembles have been created recently, but should not necessarily be put together only for International Women’s Day.
