The Louis Nigg Barn near Sisseton in Roberts County was added to the National Register of Historic Places in March.
The National Register is the official federal list of properties identified as important in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, and culture. The State Historic Preservation Office of the State Historical Society works in conjunction with the National Park Service, which oversees the National Register program, to list the properties.
“South Dakota has a very rich history and culture ranging from prehistoric Indian villages and homesteader cabins to unique businesses and richly detailed historic neighborhoods – which are all wonderful testaments to our state,” said Ted M. Spencer, State Historic Preservation Officer and director of the State Historic Preservation Office.

CNN recently hit a journalistic “hole-in-one” with a lovely piece of post-election magic. They noticed that Roberts County right here in our backyard was the most pro-Trump in the nation. 96.2% voted for Trump in 2020. Biden received only 17 votes out of roughly 600. So they dispatched a film crew to find out what it would take to make the good people of Miami and environs happy with our new president.
Although one must be careful about drawing conclusions from too little data, the results were fascinating. One gentleman said that there is no way the president could ever get into his good graces. Apparently, Joe could cure cancer and eliminate world hunger on the same day and it wouldn’t make any difference. The others were more open-minded. They talked about “unifying the nation”. They clearly wanted policies of compromise that split the difference between their views and the platform on which Joe was just elected.
